Our condolences to the Kelly family and the Oviedo Fire Department of Florida. FireFighter Shane Kelly, 26, a 3 year veteran
of the Oviedo Fire Department died Saturday June 8, 2002. Shane was rendering assistance to trapped victims in an
overturned vehicle with six other people at the scene of an accident on the Florida Turnpike when a tractor trailer crashed
into the rescuers killing Shane and an Orlando doctor. Four other people were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
Shane was traveling with his wife, Rachel, to Tallahassee. Shane's personal vehicle was also struck although his wife was not
injured. Lars White, Division Chief, Oviedo Fire Rescue said the death would be considered in the line of duty since Shaney
was performing his professional duties even though he was not in the service of Oviedo Fire Rescue at the time. Shane had
received numerous letters of appreciation for his job performance and is recognized by his peers as both a leader and
well-respected member of the organization.
Visitation for Shane will be held Wednesday June 12, 2002 9AM followed by a memorial service at 11AM at the First Baptist
Church of Oviedo. A full honor procession will follow to the Woodlawn Cemetery in Gothia. A trust fund has been established
for the family and donations in lieu of flowers can be made to:
