Our condolences to the Cook family and the Birmingham, Alabama Fire Department. Captain Carl Cook, 55, a 27 year veteran
with the Birminham, AL Fire and Rescue Service died Friday, June 15, 2001. Carl died of a heart attack following his annual
physical fitness test. He was complaining of chest pain and shortness of breath after the fitness test. His brothers began
immediate assistance and he was transported to Princeton Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Carl had just been
approved by his doctor to return to duty after a recent heart condition.
Cook was one of the first African-Americans hired in Birmingham. He also testified before the U.S. Senate for affirmative
action and was one of the founders of the Birmingham Professional Firefighters Association.
