1/29/08 Line of Duty Death - Collinsville, MS
Our condolences to the Walker family and the Collinsville
Volunteer Fire Department of Mississippi. Fire Chief Walter
Walker, 68, an over 30 year veteran of the Collinsville
Volunteer Fire Department, died Saturday January 26, 2008.
Walter responding to a motor vehicle accident in his personal
vehicle when he lost control on Highway 19 in wet road
conditions and struck a tree. Walter was killed on impact.

1/28/08 Line of Duty Death - Huttonsville, WV
Our condolences to the McAtee family and the Huttonsville-Mill
Creek Volunteer Fire Department of Huttonsville, West Virginia.
FirFighter Robert McAtee, 55, a 38 year veteran of the
Huttonsville-Mill Creek Volunteer Fire Department, died Sunday
January 20, 2008. Robert had responded to a chimney fire and
reported that he thought that he had pulled a muscle opening
the apparatus bay door. He refused treatment and returned the
apparatus to the fire station before returning home. Later his
wife called their son, Fire Chief Rodney McAtee, to the home
where Robert was unresponsive. He was transported to a local
hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

1/27/08 Attention WFD Members
It is with deep regret we announce the passing of Remo DiMichele,
father-in-law of Waterbury FireFighters David Valente and Kevin
Stokes. Calling hours will be held on Monday January 28, 2008
5-8PM at Maiorano Funeral Home in Waterbury. A funeral mass will
be held on Tuesday January 29, 2008 10:20AM at Our Lady of Mt.
Carmel Church in Waterbury followed by entombment at Calvary Queen
of Peace Mausoleum in Waterbury.
1/25/08 Line of Duty Death - Raleigh, NC
Our condolences to the Jones family and the Raleigh Fire Department
of North Carolina. Lieutenant Herman Jones, 58, a 27 year veteran of
the Raleigh Fire Department, died Tuesday January 22, 2008. Herman was
exercising behind the fire station on Friday January 18, 2008 when an
EMS call came in. While responding he noted to his supervisor that he
thought he had pulled his hamstring but did not complain again until
later that night. He was found sweating and complaining of indigestion
and pain in his left leg. No pulse could be found in his left foot and
he was transported to Wake Medical Center. Examination showed he was
suffering from a torn aorta. He was later transferred to UNC Hospital
in Chapel Hill where he passed away from his injury on Tuesday January
22, 2008.

1/24/08 Line of Duty Death - Painstville, KY
Our condolences to the Burchett family and the Paintsville
Fire-Rescue-EMS Department of Kentucky. Assistant Fire Chief/EMS
Director Christa Burchett, a veteran of the Paintsville Fire-Rescue-EMS
Department, died Tuesday January 22, 2008. Christa had responded to
an MVA involving an injured pregnant woman on US 460. She was
evaluating and assisting the injured woman back to the ambulance when
a coal truck crested the the hill and was unable to stop in icy
conditions, hitting a police cruiser before striking Christa and her
patient Erica Brown. Erica Brown was pronounced at the scene. Christa
was transported to Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center where she
died shortly after.

1/23/08 Line of Duty Death - Manchester, MI
Our condolences to the Berra family and the West County EMS and Fire
Protection District of Manchester, Missouri. Paramedic-FireFighter
Louis Berra, 49, an 11 year veteran of the West County EMS and Fire
Protection District and the IAFF Local 2665, died Friday January 18,
2008. Louis was a runner and usually woke early for his morning run.
When his brother firefighters awoke and he was not awake, they found
him expired in the bedroom of his Manchester Road fire station.

1/22/08 Attention WFD Members
It is with deep regret we announce the passing of Dennis Barnes,
brother of Waterbury FireFighter Coral Barnes. Calling hours and
a funeral service for Dennis will be held on Thursday January 24,
2008 10AM until the time of the funeral service at Zion Baptist
Church in Waterbury.
1/17/08 Line of Duty Death - Cambria, WI
Our condolences to the Jones family and the Cambria Volunteer Fire
Department of Wisconsin. FireFighter Ryan Jones, 20, a member of the
Cambria Volunteer Fire Department and the Cambria Community Ambulance
Service since he graduated high school, died Tuesday January 15, 2008.
Ryan was killed when when his car crossed into opposing traffic and
collided with two semi-trucks on Highway 33 north of the Cambria.

1/14/08 Line of Duty Death - Towson, MD
Our condolences to the Dixon family, the Baltimore County Fire
Department, and the Liberty Road Volunteer Fire Company of Maryland.
FireFighter Jarrett Dixon, 33, a Fire Driver for the Baltimore County
Fire Department and member of the Liberty Road Volunteer Fire Company,
died Sunday January 13, 2008. On Wednesday January 9, 2008 Jarrett was
performing physical fitness training while on duty at his station when
he experienced chest pain. He was treated and transported to the hospital.
He was subsequently taken to a second hospital/heart center for further
treatment including a cardiac catheterization. He was then cleared for
release and allowed to go home. While at home on Sunday January 13, 2008
Jarrett suffered a seizure, followed by cardiac arrest while being
transported by his volunteer company (Liberty Road VFC) EMS to a local
hospital where he passed away.

Today I updated the Armpatch Gallery with 24 new armpatches, including
these from the DCFD Engine Company 16, Protecting the President of the

1/9/08 Line of Duty Death - Pittsburgh, PA
Our condolences to the Jordan family and the Penn Hills #1
Volunteer Fire Department of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. FireFighter
Harvey Jordan, 71, a 4 year veteran of the Penn Hills #1 Volunteer
Fire Department, died Monday January, 2007. Harvey was responding the
Lincoln Park fire hall for an automatic fire alarm when he experienced
shortness of breath. He was treated and transported to UPMC/St.
Margaret's Hospital where he passed away shortly after.

1/8/08 Line of Duty Death - Scranton, PA
Our condolences to the Robeson family and the Scranton Fire
Department of Pennsylvania. Captain James Robeson, 50, a 25
year veteran of the Scranton Fire Department, died Sunday
January 6, 2008. James was operating in the bucket of a
ladder truck at a structrure fire in the City's Hill section
when the bucket came in contact with power lines. He was
transported to Community Medical Center where he was pronounced.
An elderly couple perished in the fire and three other
firefighters were injured at the incident.

1/7/08 Line of Duty Death - FDNY, NY
Our condolences to the Martinson family and the Fire Department
of New York City. Lieutenant John Martinson, 40, a 14 year veteran
of the FDNY, died Thursday January 3, 2008. John was on Engine 249,
the first arriving company at a structure fire in the 14-story Ebbets
Field Apartments in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. He went into cardiac
arrest after running out of air. He was rescued and transported to
Kings County Hospital where he died from his burns and smoke inhalation.

1/4/08 Line of Duty Death - Kimball Twp, MI
Our condolences to the Paterson family and the Kimball Township
Fire Department of Michigan. FireFighter Donald Paterson, 65, a
35 year veteran of the Kimball Township Fire Department, died
Tuesday January 1, 2008. Donald had responded to a wires down
call during a winter storm. He didn't make the call but stayed
behind to perform station duties. Later that evening, after
returning home, he suffered chest pains. He was transported to
Port Huron Hospital where died shortly after during surgery.

1/3/08 Line of Duty Death - Reidsville, NC
Our condolences to the Ellington family and the Oregon Hill Volunteer
Fire Department of Reidsville, North Carolina. FireFighter Paul
Ellington, 36, a 17 year veteran of the Oregon Hill Volunteer Fire
Department, died Tuesday January 1, 2007. Paul was responding to a
mobile home fire in his personal vehicle when he lost control of
his vehicle before striking a group of trees and sliding down an
embankment. Paul did not survive the crash.

1/2/08 Attention WFD Members
It is with deep regret we announce the passing of John Solomita,
uncle of the late Waterbury Fire Captain John Keane.
John Keane
lost his life in a line of duty apparatus accident in May of 2007,
he was named after his uncle. Calling hours for John will be held
on Wednesday January 2, 2008 10-11AM at Mulville Funeral Home in
Waterbury. A funeral service for John will be held on Wednesday
January 2, 2008 11AM at the funeral home followed by a burial in
Calvary Cemetery.
