4/30/07 Photo Gallery Update
Just after 4PM on Friday, Waterbury FireFighters stationed at Engine 7
on Walnut Street were greeted by pounding at the front door. Neighbors
were alerting them of the structure fire just next door to the station
on Locust Street. The multi-family home had been vacant for years and
had heavy fire on all 3 floors in the rear. Captain Robert Stoeckert
has submitted 8 photos of the fire and I have added them to the
Robert Stoeckert Photo Gallery.
4/27/07 Line of Duty Death - Birmingham, AL
Our condolences to the Gafford family and the Birmingham Fire and
Rescue Department of Alabama. Captain Billy Gafford, 56, a 23 year
veteran of the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Department, died Wednesday
April 25, 2007. Billy was performing an annual fitness training
exercise at the University of Alabama-Birmingham when he suffered
a heart attack and collapsed. He was transported to University of
Alabama-Birmingham Hospital where he died shortly after.

4/26/07 Line of Duty Death - Chesterfield, VA
Our condolences to the Newsome family and the Chesterfield Fire and
EMS Department of Virginia. Captain Joseph Newsome, 40, an 18 year
veteran of the Chesterfield Fire and EMS Department, died Monday
April 23, 2007. Joseph was performing required fitness training when
he suffered a heart attack and collapsed on a treadmill. He was
transported to a local hospital where he died shortly after.

4/25/07 Attention WFD Members
The Local 1339 Blood Drive will be held in Memory of Waterbury FireFghter
Jeff Trota
at the Waterville Firehouse on Saturday May 19, 2007 9AM-1:45PM. Anyone

There will be a Benefit Ziti Dinner for the DeBisschop Triplets:
Jeffrey, Jack, and John. Previously a member of the Waterbury FD,
and now the Naugatuck FD, John and JoAnn DeBisschop announced the
birth of their triplets last month. The Ziti Dinner will be held
on Saturday May 19, 2007 4-8PM at the American Legion Post 17
Hall in Naugatuck. Tickets are $4 for children, $8 for adults. To

4/23/07 Armpatch Gallery Update
Today I updated the Armpatch Gallery with 24 new armpatches,
including these two submissions from the Manteca Fire Department
of California and the Stonewall Jackson Volunteer Fire Department
and Rescue Squad of Manassas in Prince William County, Virginia.

4/19/07 Line of Duty Death - Prince William County, VA
Our condolences to the Wilson family and the Prince William County
Department of Fire & Rescue of Virginia. FireFighter Technician I
Kyle Wilson, 24, a 2 year veteran of the Prince William County Fire
Department, died Monday April 16, 2007. Kyle was searching with
Lieutenant Jason Reese for victims on the second floor of a heavily
involved residential structure fire in Woodbridge when the roof and
ceiling collapsed. Kyle was seperated from his partner and trapped
during the partial collapse. Lt. Reese was burned and two other
firefighters were injured during the rescue attempt, but crews were
unable to reach Kyle.

4/18/07 Attention WFD Members
It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Rose
Calabro, mother of Retired Waterbury Fire Driver Michael Calabro.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday April 18, 2007 5-8PM at
Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Funeral Home. A funeral mass
will be held on Thursday April 19, 2007 10AM at Sacred Heart
Church followed by a burial in Calvary Cemetery.
4/17/07 Attention WFD Members
It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Retired
Waterbury Fire Lieutenant Arthur Brophy Jr. Arthur was a 20 year
veteran, retiring in 1986. Calling hours will be held on
Wednesday April 18, 2007 5-8PM at Maiorano Funeral Home. A
funeral mass will be held on Thursday April 19, 2007 11AM at
Saints Peter & Paul Church followed by an entombment in
Calvary Queen of Peace Mausoleum.
4/16/07 Line of Duty Death - California Dept. of Forestry, CA
Our condolences to the Zollner family and the California Department
of Forestry and Fire Protection. Chief Bryan Zollner, 44, the North
Region Staff Chief of Operations for the CDF and 26 year veteran of
many California fire agencies, died Thursday April 12, 2007. Bryan
was traveling east on State Road 44 in icy conditions near Redding
in Lassen County. He was killed when his CDF Ford Expedition left
the roadway and struck a tree.

4/12/07 Armpatch Gallery Update

4/10/07 Line of Duty Death - Ceredo, WV
Our condolences to the Jaros family and the Ceredo Volunteer Fire
Department of West Virginia. FireFighter Christopher Jaros, 24, a
three year veteran of the Ceredo Volunteer Fire Department, died
Saturday April 7, 2007. Christopher was responding in his personal
vehicle to the main fire station for an alarm when he was involved
in a two-car motor vehicle accident. Christopher was ejected and
died at the scene of the accident on Route 60.

4/9/07 Line of Duty Death - Rome, OH
Our condolences to the Olinik family and the Rome Volunteer Fire
Department of Ohio. FireFighter Steve Olinik, 65, a veteran volunteer
firefighter of the Rome Volunteer Fire Department, died Friday March
30, 2007. Steve had responded to the station on Thursday, March 29th
for a mutual aid response to a report of a grass fire when he suffered
a heart attack and collapsed at the station. He was transported to
Ashtabula County Medial Center where he passed away the next day.

4/6/07 New FireFighting Video
While doing some research I found another FireFighting Video on
YouTube to add to my collection. This clip from a shocking video
television show features a highway accident with a 4,000 gallon
tanker full of styrene exploding in Kow Chung, Taiwan. It certainly
looks like a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion) to me.
