2/25/04 Line of Duty Death - Liberty Township, PA
Our condolences to the Conricote family and the Liberty Township Fire
Department of Youngstown, Pennsylvania. FireFighter Eddie Conricote,
55, a 15 year veteran of the Liberty Township Fire Department died
Monday February 23, 2004. Eddie was pulling hose at the scene of a
car fire inside a garage when he fell, striking his head on the ground.
He was rushed to Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Youngtown where he was
pronounced dead shortly after.

2/23/04 Line of Duty Death - Brisben, NY
Our condolences to the Heatherman family and the Brisben Fire Department of New York. Fire Police Captain Ernest Heatherman,
45, a 6 year veteran volunteer with the Brisben Fire Department
died Monday February 16, 2004. Ernest had mentioned he was
not feeling well and had gone home to take a nap after returning
from a chimney fire. His wife called 911 an hour later reporting her
husband was having a heart attack. He was rushed to Wilson
Memorial Regional Medical Center in Johnson City where he was
pronounced dead.

2/21/04 Line of Duty Death - Carthage, MO
Our condolences to the Fierro family and the
Carthage Fire Department of Missouri. FireFighter
Steve Fierro, 40, a 12 year veteran of the Carthage
Fire Department died Wednesday February 18, 2004.
Steve died of smoke inhalation while battling a blaze
near Diamond, Missouri. The accident is still under
investigation.

2/18/04 Line of Duty Death - Wood River, NE
Our condolences to the Heminger family, the Woilatewicz family, and
the Wood River Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department of Nebraska.
Captain Robert Heminger, 39, a 20 year veteran of the Wood River
Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department died Sunday February 15,
2004. Captain Kenny Woilatewicz, 38, also a veteran of the Wood
River Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department died Tuesday February
17, 2004. Robert and Kenny were first on scene and performing search
and rescue for a trapped elderly woman at an early morning single
family structure fire on Saturday February 14, 2004. Both firefighters
were trapped when the roof of the room they were searching
collapsed. They were rescued by a Wood River RIT team and rushed
to Saint Francis Medical Center where they were listed in critical
condition. Robert died early the next morning and Kenny died the
following afternoon. The trapped occupant, Anna Carrig, 73, was
pronounced dead at the scene.

2/17/04 Attention WFD Members
Local 1339 Political Action Alert
Connecticut Governor John Rowland will be trying to eliminate
Collective Bargaining and Binding Arbitration in Hartford on
Thursday February 26, 2004. Local 1339 will be sponsoring 2
buses to leave the Hamilton Avenue Commuter Lot in Waterbury
at 10AM to lobby in Hartford (don't forget to wear dress blues)
and return to Waterbury at 4PM with the second bus possibly
returning at 6PM. Any other local departments who would like to
'Get on the Bus' please contact Local 1339 Offices at (203)
574-5668.
2/16/04 Attention WFD Members
It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of John
Crouthamel, infant son of Waterbury FireFighter Jack Crouthamel
and his wife Elizabeth. There will be no calling hours and the funeral
services will be private.
2/14/04 Line of Duty Death - Lexington, KY
Our condolences to the Cowan family and the Lexington Division of
Fire and Emergency Services of Kentucky. Lieutenant Brenda Cowan,
40, a 12 year veteran of the Lexington Division of Fire and Emergency
Services died Friday February 13, 2004. Brenda and another firefighter
were struck by gunfire while attending to a female gunshot victim.
Both firefighters were airlifted to University of Kentucky Hospital
where Brenda died shortly after. The other firefighter, Jim Sanford,
was listed in stable condition.

2/9/04 Line of Duty Death - Penrose, CO
Our condolences to the Lynch family and the Penrose Volunteer
Fire Department of Colorado. FireFighter Michael Lynch, 32, an
eight month veteran of the Penrose Volunteer Fire Department
died Tuesday February 3, 2004. Michael was directing traffic at
the scene of an mva with injuries on U.S. Highway 50 and
Colorado 115 when he was struck by a passing automobile. He
was transported to Saint Thomas Moore Hospital in Canon City
where he died hours later.

2/5/04 Line of Duty Death - Norfolk, VA
Our condolences to the Nuckols family and the Navy Regional
Fire Rescue / Hampton Roads Fire Deparment of Norfolk, Virginia.
FireFighter Jean Nuckols, 47, a 23 year veteran of the department
died January 31, 2004. Jean had been performing training activities
when he suffered a stroke. He was rushed to a local hospital where
he died three days later.

2/2/04 Attention WFD Members
It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Retired
Waterbury Deputy Chief Edward Groody. Edward retired in 1975
after 32 years of service. Edward's three sons all attained the
rank of chief officer in the Waterbury Fire Department. Calling
hours will be held for Edward on Tuesday February 3, 2004
5-8PM at Stokes Funeral Home. A funeral will be held for Edward
on Wednesday February 4, 2004 (time tba) at Saint Patrick's
Church with military and fire department honors at New Saint
Joseph's Cemetery.
It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Alice Attardo,
mother of Waterbury Dispatcher Al Attardo. A wake will be held for Alice
on Wednesday February 4, 2004 4-8PM at Dougherty Brothers Funeral
Home in Plainfield. A funeral will be held for Alice on Thursday February
5, 2004 at Saint John's Church in Plainfield.
