1/28/03 Line of Duty Death - Charlotte, NC
Our condolences to the Copeland family and the Charlotte Fire Department of North
Carolina. Captain Michael Copeland, 50, a 23 year veteran of the Charlotte Fire
Department died Saturday January 25, 2003. Michael was the incident commander
at a live fire training exercise when he suffered an apparent heart attack. He was
exiting the apparatus in full gear when he collapsed. Neither his brothers nor the
staff at Carolinas Medical Center were able to resuscitate him.

1/25/03 Line of Duty Death - Webster Groves, MO
Our condolences to the Mignerone family and the Webster Groves Fire Department
of Missouri. Fire Captain/Chief Medical Officer Dennis Mignerone, 50, a 26 year
veteran of the Webster Groves Fire Department died Tuesday January 21, 2003.
Dennis was on duty performing department prescribed exercises when he had chest
pains. He was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead.

1/24/03 Line of Duty Death - Shippensburg, PA
Our condolences to the Hess family, the West End Fire and Rescue Company, and
the Fannett Metal Fire Department of Pennsylvania. Lieutenant Keith Hess, 22, a
volunteer firefighter with the West Fire and Rescue Company and career EMT with
the Fannett Metal Fire Department died Monday January 20, 2003. Keith was
performing salvage and overhaul on the first floor after a structure fire when a
chimney collapsed and caused the second floor to collapse onto three firefighters
on the first floor. Cumberland Valley Hose Company Assistant Chief Cory Connelly
and FireFighter Dave Ocker were also in the collapse area but were rescued and
treated and released at Chambersburg Hospital. Keith was airlifted by Life Lion to
Chambersburg Hospital were he was pronounced dead.

1/24/03 Line of Duty Death - Polk Township, PA
Our condolences to the McAuley family and the Polk Township Volunteer Fire
Company of Pennsylvania. Fire Police Officer James McAuley, 78, a 12 year
veteran of the Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company died Friday January 17,
2003. James was performing his duties at the scene of a car fire when he
moved his truck. He was found slumped over the wheel a short time later
apparently having suffered a heart attack. His brothers performed CPR and
transported him to Palmerton Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

1/23/03 Line of Duty Death - Porter, TX
Our condolences to the Staley family and the Porter Volunteer Fire Department of
Texas. FireFighter Gary Staley, 33, an 18 month veteran of the Porter Volunteer
Fire Department died Sunday January 19, 2003. Gary was operating at the scene
of an auto repair shop structure fire in Montgomery County when an apparent
flashover occurred. Three of his crew members on a hand line with him were able
to find their way out of the building after exit air horns were sounded. Juan Chapa
of the Porter Volunteer Fire Department and Allen Haynes of the New Caney Fire
Department were burned badly on the head, arms, and torso and were transported
a special burn unit at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. A third firefighter was
treated for burns to his hands and arms at the scene.

1/23/03 Line of Duty Death - Bonham, TX
Our condolences to the Taylor family, the Bonham Fire Department, and the Blossom
Volunteer Fire Department of Texas. FireFighter/EMT James Taylor, 28, a six month
veteran of the Bonham Fire Department died Sunday January 19, 2003. James was
responding to an MVA when his ambulance Medic 3 was involved in a head on
collision with a PT Cruiser. Both vehicles caught fire after the collision. The driver of
the ambulance, David Hale, was injured and transported to a local hospital in guarded
condition. The driver of the other vehicle also died.

gallery. Interesting note: Pete introduced himself to me in an email because his
father was stationed with my father on the Waterbury Fire Department 10-15

1/18/03 A Little Vacation
A little vacation coming my way. Flying to (hopefully) sunny Florida today to visit
family in Spring Hill and get away from this nosehair freezing weather (-1 F this
morning) in Connecticut for a few days and then I'm making the drive back home
with Cheryl and the kids. Stay safe.
1/15/03 Line of Duty Death - Springfield, IL
Our condolences to the Rotherham family and the Springfield Fire Department of Illinois.
Captain Joseph Rotherham, a 13 year veteran of the Springfield Fire Department died
Tuesday January 14, 2003. Joseph was operating at a structure fire on East Iles Avenue
at 1:30AM. He exited the structure to change his bottle and collapsed. He was treated by
EMS on scene and transported to St. John's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

1/15/03 Line of Duty Death - San Francisco, CA
Our condolences to the Ohler family and the San Francisco Fire Department of California.
FireFighter Melinda Ohler, 40, a 13 year veteran of the San Francisco Fire Department died
Monday January 13, 2003 from a severe head injury sustained on Wednesday January 8,
2003. Melinda was responding to an alarm at San Francisco International Airport when
she fell from the rear of the open cab spare apparatus she was riding in. The accident
occured a block away from Station 42.

1/15/03 Line of Duty Death - Guam
Our condolences to the Periera family and the Guam Fire Department. FireFighter James Periera, 41,
a 15 year veteran of the Guam Fire Department died Thursday January 9, 2003. James was resting
at the Agat Fire Station when he began having seizures. He was transported to Guam Naval Hospital
where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is to determine his cause of death but it is believed
that he died from cardiac arrest.

1/14/03 Line of Duty Death - Provo, UT
Our condolences to the Guerrero family and the Provo Fire Department, Life Flight, and the
Lone Peak Fire District of Utah. FireFighter Paramedic and Flight Medic Mario Guerrero, 38,
a 10 year veteran of the Provo Fire Department died Friday January 10, 2003. Mario was
responding to an MVA when the Life Flight helicopter he was responding in crashed near
Interstate 80. The pilot, Craig Bingham, 32 was also killed. Flight Nurse Stein Rosqvist
survived the crash and was transported to LDS Hospital in critical condition.

1/10/03 Line of Duty Death - Donalsonville, GA
Our condolences to the Collins family and the Donalsonville Fire and Rescue of Georgia. FireFighter
Lattie Collins, 36, a volunteer with the department for just three months died Wednesday January
8, 2003. Lattie was responding to the fire station for an MVA dispatch when his personal vehicle
was struck at an intersection.

1/9/03 Line of Duty Death - Coats, NC
Our condolences to the Carroll family and the Coats-Grove Fire and Rescue of Coats, North
Carolina. FireFighter Terry Carroll, 51, a 6 year veteran of the Coats-Grove Fire and Rescue
died Tuesday January 7, 2003. Terry passed away at Duke Medical Center as a result of
injuries he sustained from a massive heart attack during an EMS call on Friday December 27,
2002.

1/7/03 Line of Duty Death - Orchard Park, NY
Our condolences to the Killian family and the Windom Fire Company of Orchard Park, New York.
Assistant Chief Michael Killian, 34, a 10 year veteran with the Windom Fire Company died Thursday
January 2, 2003. Michael collapsed and died from a massive myocardial infarction while performing
routine maintenance at the fire station.
