5/31/02 FireFighter John Izzi Benefit Party II
There will be another benefit party for John Izzi of the WFD Engine 1 who was injured in a motorcycle accident in South
Carolina two weeks ago. The benefit will be on Father's Day - Sunday June 16, 2002 12 Noon at the Ponte Club Pavillion,
380 Farmwood Road in Waterbury. Food, beer, and soda will be served and there will be horseshoes and entertainment for the
kids. Donation for adults is $20 and $10 for kids 12 and under. For more information contact: Shawn Pace (T3-A), Pete

5/28/02 Attention WFD Members
There will be a Burn Camp Work Party on Monday June 10, 2002. Work needed to be done: Seed playing field, finish splitting
firewood, and screen in and reroof chapel. Tools needed: Any tools that will help accomplish the above goals. Anyone able to
attend contact Frank Walsh at Station 2 by Sunday June 2, 2002.

I only got to stay until 2:30 - had to work last night, but what a party yesterday. Lots of bikes and good friends. Kids going

5/23/02 Line of Duty Death - Alameda County, CA
Our condolences to the Turner family and the Alameda County Fire Department of California. Probationary FireFighter
Sekou Turner, 28, two months away from completing his first year on the Alameda County Fire Department died
Wednesday May 22, 2002. Sekou suffered a heart attack while clearing from an EMS incident. His brother firefighters
provided CPR but he was pronounced dead an hour after arriving at San Ramon Regional Medical Center.

5/22/02 Extrication Training Photos
Multi-company extrication training Monday morning with WFD Captain Couture. Nice job Mike. E1 E2 E8 T1 R9 B1 simulated a
rollover on wheels (actually rims) with the roof caved in and a rush on driver. We took the roof and did a dash roll. 11 photos

5/21/02 FireFighter John Izzi Benefit Party
There will be a benefit party for John Izzi of the WFD Engine 1 on Saturday May 25, 2002 1PM at 105 Hawthorne Avenue in
Waterbury. John was involved in a motorcycle accident at bike week in South Carolina last week. Food, beer, and
soda will be served and there will be a DJ and a jumping castle for the kids. Donation is $20 - kids are free. All proceeds

5/17/02 Line of Duty Death - Screven County, GA
Our condolences to the Brown family and the Screven County Fire Department of Georgia. FireFighter Jeremy Brown, 27,
a 9 year veteran of the Screven County Fire Department died Tuesday May 7, 2002. Jeremy was responding to a call in
his private vehicle when he suffered a heart attack and was involved in a one car mva. He was treated by his brother
firefighters and Medstar EMS at the scene before he was transported to Screven County Hospital where he later died.

5/16/02 Torrington FD Bike Ride
The 1st Annual Torrington Firefighters Local 1567 Bike Ride to benefit the Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital will be held on
Sunday June 23, 2002. Registration will be at fire headquaters at 111 Water Street in Torrington at 9AM. The ride will start
at 10AM ending with a pig roast at the Landing Zone Grill in Burlington, CT. Registration cost is $20 per bike ($25 with a

I was sick on Friday, but my wife and my father took some photos of the 11th Annual Memorial Service of the Waterbury
Fire Department. Half of the photos in the
2002 Waterbury Memorial
photo gallery were submitted by Howard Osorio of WFD T1. Members of the department, city, and the public honored
Waterbury FireFighters who have died in the line of duty and members of our department who have died in the past year. I
am working on posting a transcript with photos of some of the speeches made similar to the one I did last year with
Captain Jim Peplau's speech. Jim's speech can be found in the Fallen Brothers section

5/14/02 Line of Duty Death - Brookline, MA
Our condolences to the Tynan family and the Brookline Fire Department of Massachusetts. FireFighter Joseph Tynan Jr., 55,
a veteran of the Brookline Fire Department died Wednesday May 8, 2002. Joseph died from complications due to a severe
head injury he received when he fell from an apparatus while responding to an alarm on November 23, 1982.

Keith Creamer of the Byram VFD in Greenwich, Connecticut sent me a photo of his helmet shield which I added to the
Helmet Shield Gallery.
I also went through my armpatch folder and added another 38 armpatches to the

5/10/02 Line of Duty Death - Laurens County, SC
Our condolences to the Kickler family and the Pelham-Batesville Fire Department and the Laurens County Fire Department of
South Carolina. Assistant Chief Thomas Kickler, 38, an 8 year veteran of the Laurens County Fire Department, and the
Assistant Chief of the Pelham-Batesville Fire Department for 1 year, died Monday May 6, 2002. Thomas responded with the
Laurens County Fire Department to a double-wide mobile home fire. Afterwards he said he felt ill and thought he might be
sick. Later that evening his body was found by a friend in his home.

5/9/02 Line of Duty Death - Oakland, MD
Our condolences to the Turney family and the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department of Maryland. FireFighter/EMT David Turney,
50, a 27 year veteran of the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department died Monday May 6, 2002. David was alone in the dispatch
center at Garrett County Central Alarm when he suffered a massive heart attack. He was found unresponsive and collapsed
at his 911 console by a brother firefighter visiting the dispatch center. David was rushed by ambulance to Garrett County
Memorial Hospital where was pronounced dead.

5/7/02 Line of Duty Death - Brookhaven, PA
Our condolences to the Kangas family and the Brookhaven Fire Department of Pennsylvania. Junior FireFighter Christopher
Kangas, 14, an eighth-grader at Northley Junior High School died one day before his 15th birthday on Saturday May 4, 2002.
Christopher was responding with his bicycle to an alarm when he was struck by a 16 year old driver. He died a few hours
later Children's Hospital as a result of the multiple head traumas he received in the crash.

5/6/02 Line of Duty Death - St. Louis, MO
Our condolences to the Martin and Morrison families and the St. Louis Fire Department of Missouri. FireFighters Derek Martin
and Rob Morrison, both 38 years old and both 11 year veterans of the St. Louis Fire Department Rescue 1 died Friday May
3, 2002. Derek and Rob became trapped while trying to rescue a brother firefighter who was lost inside Gravios
Refrigeration, a two story brick building. The firefighter they were searching for managed to escape on his own. Derek and
Rob were found and rushed to a local hospital, but it was too late, they died shortly after at the hospital. Two other
firefighters were injured in the blaze.
