News Archive» February 2001 2/28/01 WFD in Action and Upcoming Raffle
WFD in action - I added another photo to the
Waterbury Fire Department Press
photo gallery.
Keep your eyes open. I will be posting information on a raffle for the Connecticut
FireFighters Pipes and Drums. They are raffling off a bar - made out of the nose of a fire apparatus. Details will
follow soon. For now, you can get a glimpse of what it will look like in the
Connecticut FireFighters Pipes and Drums
photo gallery.
I decided to start a new photo gallery for pictures from the newspaper showing the
Waterbury Fire Department in action. Please visit the
Waterbury Fire Department Press
photo gallery, or the
Photo Gallery
page - 8 galleries now!
I also added a new cartoon to the
FireHouse Funnies
page - thanks Bucko!
Well I made my first visit to the Farmington
Red Cross
for blood platelet donation. It turns out they collect plasma and platelets the first visit. It allows them to
count your platelets. With this number they can give you an estimate of how long it will take for them to collect your
platelets based on your platelet count and your height/weight. It was no big deal, just like donating whole blood. The
needle is slightly smaller than the one they use for whole blood collection. The machine draws your blood, seperates the
plasma, and returns everything back to you. After the plasma is collected, they give you some saline to replace the
fluids removed. It took about a half an hour, and they had TV's with headphones playing movies. In between collections,
all tubing and containers that your blood comes in contact with on the machine are replaced with sterile disposable ones.
The plasma and platelets removed are replaced by your body in just a couple days, allowing you to donate up to 23 times
per year (every 2 weeks). It was a fulfilling experience and I look forward to my next visit.
Any one interesting in becoming a platelet or plasma donor, please contact Judy Hughes at
(860) 678-2749, American Red Cross Blood Services, Connecticut Region, Farmington, CT.
The New York City FireFighter's Hockey Team and FireFighter Ministries are sponsoring the
Teddy Bears for Tykes Program. Through donations from corporations, organizations, and individuals, the program will
purchase and donate teddy bears to the following children:
I would just like to let everyone who donated blood at Kevin McDonald's blood drive, it has
been 56 days, we are all able to donate again starting today. I am going to Red Cross in Farmington this afternoon for
my first visit to donate blood platelets. As Rich would say, I am following the path that Kevin started. I will post
more information about donating platelets tonight.
Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Brian Comerford, 32, of Middlebury, CT.
Brian was a Middlebury firefighter, husband, and father of three. He was killed in a motor vehicle accident on
February 18 in Waterbury. Brian was a volunteer in Middlebury and had just joined the paid department in Meriden six
months ago.
I would like to apologize for the lack of updates on the website, it has been nearly a month
since I made changes to the website.
