News Archive» December 2000 12/29/00 Waterbury Fire Dept. Blood Drive
I would like to thank everyone who came out to Kennedy High School yesterday. I would like to
extend a special thanks to Mike Kalosky and Joe McDermott, who organized the event, and everyone who volunteered to
help in other ways. Even though I didn't get to see him, thanks Glen, for coming and showing your support. I'm sure everyone
who did get to see you, was glad to see you are doing well. This blood drive was in Kevin's memory, and I'm sure he would
have been proud. 91 people attended and donated 74 pints of blood to the American Red Cross.
I added a new page called
FireHouse Funnies.
I would like to thank Waterbury Fire Department Acting Chief James Trainor and Dick Cesarello
of the Wheeler-Young VFW Post 201 of Waterbury for nominating Kevin McDonald posthumously for the FireFighter Gold Medal
Award. Thank you for your time and consideration.
A blood drive is being done in Kevin McDonald's name. December 28th at Kennedy High School
in Waterbury. Please call Engine 2 at 597-3402 for more information. If you plan on donating, please call Engine 2
and let them know you are coming, they would like to know how many people to expect. The drive has been nicknamed
'Give a Pint, Get a Pint'. There will be a gathering at the Crossroads Cantina following the blood drive.
Kevin McDonald Memorial Helmet Stickers are available, with proceeds going to the McDonald
Family Fund. You can reach the order form from the

Kevin McDonald Memorial T-Shirts are available, with proceeds going to the McDonald Family Fund.
You can reach the order form from the Fallen Brothers
page, or by clicking here. I added another page to
Kevin's memorial. Kevin's eulogy was written by 4 of his closest friends and brother firefighters. I have added a page
with these stirring words to Kevin's Memorial. You can reach the eulogy from the
Fallen Brothers page, or by clicking
here.
I would like to thank everyone who came to the B & D shift Christmas party at the Marriott Hotel
Sunday evening. A good time was had by all, and quite a bit of holiday cheer was consumed.
I added 6 more affiliates,
American Express,
Case Logic Direct,
Frag City,
Liquor.com,
Performance Products, and
Real Beer Tour.
Robin sent me 5 more photos for
Kevin McDonald's Photo Gallery. This brings the photo
gallery up to 40 photos.
Monday a Waterbury Superior Court Judge ruled that the city cannot close a fire company without
negotiating with the fire union. The judge extended a restraining order to keep Engine 2 in service and delay any
layoffs until March 3rd. This gives the fire union time to negotiate other means of making consessions to help out the
city in its financial situation.
Rich Paltauf sent me 5 photos of a structure fire on South Main Street November 6th. I created
a photo gallery for them that you can reach from the
Photo Galleries page or by clicking
here.
I was in Florida for a few days and I came home to devestating newspaper headlines. As many of
you know, Waterbury is in a financial 'crisis', again. Mayor Phil Giordano, in his infinite wisdom, decided to close 3
Police Precincts, 1 Engine Company (E2), and lay off 10 firefighters. Needless to say, our Union officials got a judge
to place a temporary injunction blocking the closing of Engine 2 and the layoff of 10 firefighters the following day.
Robin McDonald sent me 7 more photos which I added to
Kevin McDonald's Photo Gallery. One of the photos
that Robin submitted was Kevin in his military dress uniform. I replaced the photos of him in his BDU's on
Kevin McDonald's Memorial Page with this photo.
I am in the process of building a page with Kevin's eulogy written by Rich Paltauf. Look for it
soon.
